News: Common Sense is Dead

An Obituary printed in the London Times.  Could just as well have been written in the USA ... Absolutely Brilliant !!!

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:

I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Google rolled out it’s latest attempt to socialize last week.  With Google +1, the search giant is hoping to generate as much love as Facebook’s "Like" feature. So what is Google +1 and why should you care?

Google +1 is designed to drive SEO and PPC search results in much the same way as the "Like" on Facebook. Likes are becoming an increasing important part of any search campaign. Depending on your industry and the scope of your competition, "Likes" can improve your SERPS results making it a desired search element. Google +1 is looking to take this a step further by extending its feature’s sphere of influence. And it starts at the click.

When a Facebook users Likes a product, service or post, it’s clout is undeniable but somewhat limited in that only a user’s friend network will see it. Still that reach is extending quantum leaps by the day, when you figure that last tally every Friend has an average of 160 other friends.  So, for example, a fan page with as few of 200 fans ("Likes") is reaching 32,000 viewers with every post.

This +1 is the opening that Google is hoping to take advantage of over Facebook, because they art the search giant online and - I'm sure - plan to take advantage of that dominance worldwide as they mature this feature. Google +1 will come up on Google search results making the rating available to anyone accessing Google.

The potential for Google +1 to be a success is high but it has a significant hurdle to overcome – Facebook. Facebook has proved to be two steps ahead of the game in social space. Facebook is approaching the 700 million monthly user mark.  If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest in the world.  And, it ranks as one of three top sites worldwide, along with Google and You Tube.

Google +1 is a good first step towards leveling the playing field, but does anyone doubt the social network giant will respond with something even more innovative and engaging?

Local Business Marketing: Nature of a Product and Sales



Every product or service in the world has its own personality or nature.  We all are are constantly selling something,.  Like it, or not, we are all selling ... all the time.  Many reading this will hate to hear that!  But, it's the truth.

"Sales" has a bad reputation overall.  Still, we're all doing it all the time.  Selling our opinions, beliefs, products, services, etc. 

Most folks just pretend "they hate selling." The whole idea of selling repels most.  But, if you really look at this, that's B.S.

Why?  Our lifelong web of beliefs, in a product, service, or whatever ... shows up every day.  It governs our buying decisions.  And, each of us continually promotes what we we believe in.  So, how does the nature of a product and sales in this relate to your business?

Take an "awake" sales and marketing perspective.  Savvy small business owners are realizing this idea has a special series, or web, of characteristics than can engage and prompts their product or service to be bought.   And, local online marketing is one way they implement  ways to put their business ahead of "the rest." 

More important, savvy small business owners realize the nature of their specific product or service has important characteristics ... it's value ... to their sales prospect, etc.  It is always a "what's in it for me" principle when selling anyone, anything.  People always buy for "their reasons."  Not ours.

As you recognize the facts here, market toward and appreciate the nature and value of your product(s) and services.  Whether marketing them online or off.  And, you will unlock the key to closing sales with your broad market of prospects.  So, what's next?  Action steps?

Number 1:  Focus on the reasons why people buy your product or service.  This comes first from an emotional standpoint (most important), versus a logical point of view (that's another post and topic). 

Number 2:  Next, craft your sales presentation to bring out the reasons re: #1.  How does your message cause prospects to know, like and trust you?  Versus simply hawking a sale?

Remember, we all love to buy.  We just hate to be sold.  And, especially from an "insincere" messenger.

So, ask yourself, what are some of the reasons your prospective buyer would buy from you?  If you are not clear on this, they definitely won't be!  So, bottom line on that, they won't buy.

Does Your Future Smell Like Marketing!



According to scientists, our sense of smell is our most powerful of all the senses.  And, aromas travel directly to the brain's emotional centers.  And, what might that mean in your future marketing?  Let's see.

With the power of scent, no wonder most men and women love "smelling" that just right scent.  Especially on someone who interests us!  Part of our animal instincts, I trust.  Anyway, perfume and fragrance manufacturers had this figured out eons ago.  And, since our most important buying decisions are typically driven by feelings, and later supported by logic (the supposed decision maker), the effects of olfactory senses in marketing seems nothing to ignore!  I say this for large and small business alike.

Perceptions registered by our other sensory centers travel through interpretive brain centers first.  In other words, those more "logical" ones.  Since I'm no expert on brain sensory centers, I'll leave it at that!  Anyway, our senses that travel through this logical route first only arrive much later at the emotional centers.  Not good news for marketing and buying decisions for our brands!

Local Business Marketing: Know the Nature of Your Product or Service and Unlock Sales

Every product or service has its own personality and nature.  And, so does every business.  I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it when I go into a local business … and, they actually know my name.  It’s rare anymore, and wonderful!

And, even your product – or service alone – can offer a special series of characteristics that can relate to your consumer.  Do you recognize the nature of your own product or service?  And, how it relates in its characteristics to your buyer?  If you do, you will unlock the key to selling your prospects!

What are your buyers emotional drivers to buy?  Since … decisions are made based on emotions … and, later justified with our “logic” … knowing your buyers “emotional drivers” to want what you offer is key.

Here’s an action step you can take to know something about what I’m asking you here.  Figure out the key reasons why people buy your product or service … and specifically, from you.  Both from an emotional and logical standpoint.  Next, craft your sales presentation to bring out those reasons.

Why do people buy from you?  Why would prospects want to buy from you?  What sets you apart?  What would make them your raving fans and referral champions?  First things, first.  Take the action step above … and, more to follow in upcoming posts!
